Why Am I Losing All My Hair? Understanding and Treating Hair Loss

Hi, I'm Clarissa from Our Doctor, and today, we're diving into a common concern: hair loss. Many people wonder, why am I losing my hair? It’s a question with complex answers, as hair loss can stem from a variety of causes, many of which are a natural part of life.

Why Does Hair Loss Happen?

Everyone will likely experience some level of hair loss in their lifetime. One primary factor is heredity, or family history. If you have a family history of hair loss, you may be more prone to developing a condition called androgenic alopecia, also known as male or female pattern baldness. This is the most common form of hair loss and is often predictable if others in your family have experienced it.

It's normal to lose between 50 to 100 hairs per day. However, when you begin to lose more than this, it may be a condition known as telogen effluvium. This condition is usually triggered by stress or changes in the body, such as:

  • Recent childbirth
  • Stopping birth control pills
  • Major surgery
  • High fever
  • Rapid weight loss
  • High-stress situations

What Can I Do About Hair Loss?

The good news is that there are effective ways to reduce hair loss and even encourage regrowth. Some of the most common treatments include:

  • Minoxidil: Available as a liquid, foam, or shampoo, this over-the-counter solution can be applied directly to the scalp to help stimulate hair growth.
  • Biotin or Vitamin B7: This vitamin may aid in promoting keratin production, an essential protein for hair strength and growth.

However, for more advanced cases, medications and procedures can offer stronger results. Finasteride (often branded as Propecia) is a prescription medication that can slow hair loss and promote regrowth. In cases where medications are not sufficient, hair restoration surgery may be an option.

The best approach to hair loss treatment is to consult a doctor who can help determine the cause and recommend a personalized treatment plan. At Our Doctor, we offer consultations with specialists who can guide you through options, whether you prefer to handle treatment from home or seek in-office solutions.
